Migrant Worker Maintenance Loan – a maintenance loan for students in the UK
You consider studying in the UK, but besides from the recruitment process you worry about the costs of living such as rent and food. The answer is simple: the UK government will help you with a loan.
If you have worked in Great Britain for at least half a year, you can apply for a ‘Migrant Worker’ status. This way you can apply for a maintenance loan of up to 8300 pounds annually.
A maintenance loan differs from a student loan (you can read more about the latter in a separate section). What you should know is that there are two types of loans allowing you to easily start your education and graduate from a British university. All you have to do is choose your dream major and keep studying.
If you choose a British school outside London, you can get up to 8430 pounds a year. On the other hand, if you decide to study in the capitol, the loan amount will be slightly bigger, up to 11 000 pounds a year. The repayment rules are the same as in case of a student loan and depend on your future earnings.

How to get a maintenance loan?
- You have arrived to the UK before 1st September the year you want to begin studying. You can use your flight ticket or another document as a proof.
- You are eligible for the ‘Migrant Worker’ status, if you work full- or part-time, not less than 10 hours a week, and earn preferably 7500 pounds annually, regardless your place of work (although you cannot be a university employee).
